ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lewis Heaton of Heaton Ranches in McKenzie showed that healthy grasslands store carbon underground better than croplands—grazing helps pull extra carbon from the air. Research scientist Rebecca Phillips said more study will explore how preserving these lands can fight climate change.  KFYR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Emergency Services released a documentary that shares firsthand accounts from neighbors, volunteers, and federal agencies who fought wildfires that burned over 120,000 acres last October—Watford City residents watched it on Thursday to remember the community’s efforts. The film will be available online later.  KFYR-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • North Dakota Health and Human Services reported 11 hospitalizations following a spike in West Nile Virus, with 26 confirmed cases including nine with nervous system complications as of Aug. 14—citizens are advised to use insect repellent and wear protective clothing to help prevent mosquito bites.  KFYR-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Isis Sio, an 18-year-old from Dickinson, will become North Dakota’s only active female professional boxer when she debuts as a pro in October in Minot—she will mark the first domestic female boxing fight since 2019 and also runs her own gym that inspires young girls to follow in her footsteps.  KFYR-TV
