Good morning, Williston. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 11th of July.
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Farmers are facing tariffs that lower crop prices and raise costs for fertilizers and chemicals—Senator Janne Myrdal, who is also an agricultural producer, said the president has urged farmers to hang in as exports like wheat and pinto beans are affected. This challenge continues to make an already tough market even harder for North Dakota producers. KFYR-TV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Frozen federal education grants holding back about 25.4M in funds have put 109 after‑school programs serving nearly 7,000 students and teacher training in limbo as schools scramble to cover costs before the new school year starts. Education officials warned that districts must use other funds at their own risk, a move that may lead to higher fees or fewer program hours if the money is not released soon. Williston Graphic
- ➤ Summer school students from Trenton visited the NDSU Extension office in Williston last Thursday morning — they toured the site to learn about crops, seed crushing, and planting while viewing large agricultural machinery. The Extension will host its annual Field Days next Thursday to showcase the facility. KFYR-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A Department of Energy report released this week warns that North Dakota may face more blackouts as rising demand and planned plant closures strain the electric grid. The report finds that power co-ops using the Southwest Power Pool could see over 100 outage hours by 2030 (while those using MISO may see 7 to 15 outage hours) and local utilities are working on grid improvements.
