EDUCATION NEWS

  • The North Dakota House passed a charter school bill Tuesday—by a 64-to-29 vote—that creates a framework for schools open to all students without a religious curriculum. The Senate will vote on the bill again after an amendment and proposals to start a charter school will be reviewed by the Department of Public Instruction.  KFYR-TV
  • Four seats on the Williston Basin School District board will be up for election on June 10, with only one incumbent seeking reelection. Six candidates are contesting three at-large positions while one candidate is running uncontested for the rural seat+ candidate bios will be released later this week.  KFYR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Dakota Attorney General’s office urged North Dakotans who purchased generic drugs between May 2009 and December 2019 to check if they are eligible for compensation from a $39.1 million settlement—claims will depend on the amounts paid during that period. Final approval for the settlement remains pending—eligible consumers should file a claim.  KFYR-TV
  • The Senate defeated a bill to make daylight saving time permanent on April 8th—North Dakotans will continue to spring forward and fall back when they change their clocks.  KFYR-TV
  • Senator John Hoeven secured a promise from Deputy Secretary of the Interior nominee Katharine MacGregor to draft a law to protect wild horses in Theodore Roosevelt National Park. He said he will work with her on a long-term plan after last year's idea to remove the horses was dropped—showing his commitment to conservation.  KFYR-TV
